"Another Lao Outreach" (Laos)
ALO Update Vol 13 No 3
Schools
Over the past several years, ALO has helped to build and maintain
eight kindergartens, one elementary school, and one hill-tribe
boarding school. Another boarding school is being built this year.
In the remote mountain village of Yaut Liang, hill-tribe children
travel great distances to go to school—too far to live at home
and attend, so during the week they live at the school. 230 children
from five to thirteen years of age were living in two small, dirt-floored
huts. However now their living conditions and classroom experience
has greatly improved since the constructions of
new classrooms
and remodeling of dorms
with
cement
floors has been completed.
School Supplies
The Lao children at these schools are exceptionally poor. Friends
of ALO make it possible for students to receive school supplies,
uniforms, and everything they need for learning.
Nutritious Meals
Each day every child is served a well-balanced, healthy, hot meal.
The feeding program is vital for the children’s physical
health and well-being.
Health Clinics
Each year, health screenings are provided at each school for the
children and for adults in local communities. Volunteers with Health
Care Ministries assist in this project. Doctors examine the children
and give out vitamins, worm treatments, and medicines for most
common health problems.
Coats
Xieng Khouang province is located in the mountainous north. Winter
months are bitterly cold, but extreme poverty means that many children
have no warm clothes. Since 1999, yearly jacket drives raise enough
money to give each child a warm new coat.
