Preparing a Place for Hazel

Philippines—Before Mary Hazel found a home at Happy Horizons Children’s Ranch (HHCR) 10 years ago, she’d been living in a pig pen—literally. After Hazel’s mother died, her father abandoned Hazel, then died. She had no place to go. She was abused, assaulted, and forced to live with and care for pigs. This was no place for a precious child of God.

But because of generous contributions of friends like you, Happy Horizons was able to prepare a safe, loving home for the young girl. As she healed, learned, and grew at HHCR, Hazel never spoke of her past— or her family.

Recently, when preparing for Hazel’s graduation from the program, HHCR’s social worker discovered in the girl’s file the name of a possible relative. She investigated and discovered this was indeed Hazel’s relative. Years earlier, the impoverished relations had lost all contact with Hazel’s family. But through hard work, determination, and education, they had turned their lives around. Some were teachers, others seamen and politicians. The now-wealthy relatives lived in a beautiful home. And they were delighted to learn of Hazel.

But not as thrilled as Hazel was to learn that they wanted her. They prepared a place, decorating a room just for her, buying new clothes, and welcoming her with eager and open arms.Hazel is now a member of a real family and is living in a home so beautiful she couldn’t believe it was real. When you support Asia’s Little Ones, happy endings aren’t fairy tales—they’re real-life gifts of God’s grace.
